Numbered valve tags
Numbered valve tags carry a unique number for each valve, usually in sequence within a system or area: 1 to 40, V-101 to V-140, or HWS-001 to HWS-137. Type a start and end in the builder and every tag in the run is made, drawn and priced, up to 300 in one order.
Four ways to number valves
Pick one scheme for the building and keep it. The tag number is what the chart, the drawings and the O&M manual all point to.
Setting up a run
- Prefix: V-, HWS-, or nothing.
- From and to: 001 to 137. A leading zero keeps the width, so 001, 002 … 137.
- The service line and bottom line apply to the whole run; change any single tag in the list afterwards.
- Repeated or missing numbers are flagged before you can check out.
Runs count down too: 140 to 101.
Watch the length. HWS-001 is seven characters, so on a 2″ round it engraves at just ¼″. If the service is already on the top line, number 001 to 137 and the number engraves at 19/32″ — or use a 3″ × 1½″ rectangle, which takes HWS-001 at 15/32″.
How big will the number be?
The number is the biggest line on the tag. For a three-digit number:
| Tag | Number, 2 lines | Number, 3 lines | Number only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1½″ | 7/16″ | 7/16″ | 7/16″ |
| Round 2″ | 19/32″ | 19/32″ | 19/32″ |
| Square 2″ | 19/32″ | 19/32″ | 19/32″ |
| Octagon 2″ | 19/32″ | 19/32″ | 19/32″ |
| Rectangle 3″ × 1½″ | 19/32″ | 17/32″ | 19/32″ |
Longer numbers engrave smaller to fit.
